Performances of Palo Alto Players’ FLOWER DRUM SONG to benefit Chinese Historical and Cultural Project

Palo Alto Players theater company has a tradition of giving back to the community by partnering with a local nonprofit for each of their productions. The Chinese Historical and Cultural Project (CHCP) has been chosen as Players’ non-profit partner for FLOWER DRUM SONG, Asian American playwright David Henry Hwang’s new adaptation of the 1958 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical set in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Palo Alto Players will be collecting donations for CHCP in their lobby throughout the production, which runs April 26-May 12 at the Lucie Stern Theater in Palo Alto. CHCP’s traveling exhibit, Pioneering the Valley: The Chinese American Legacy in Santa Clara Valley, will also be on display at the Lucie Stern Theater. The traveling exhibit is a 14-panel color display depicting the history and contributions of the Chinese in Santa Clara Valley through photographs and text.

About the Show:

‘To create something new, we must first love what is old,’ claims Mei-Li in Tony Award-winner David Henry Hwang’s new adaptation of this Rodgers and Hammerstein jewel. Mei-Li flees Mao’s communist China after the murder of her father and finds herself in San Francisco’s Chinatown. This naive young refugee is befriended by Wang, who is struggling to keep the Chinese opera tradition alive despite his son’s determination to turn the old opera house into a swingin’ Western-style nightclub. A unique blending of American razz-ma-tazz and stylized Chinese opera tradition creates a beautifully theatrical tapestry sure to delight.
