San Jose State University is joining the National and California World War One Centennial Commissions in the Bells of Peace: A World War I Remembrance initiative (ww1cc.org/bells).  This is a national tolling of bells to honor all those who served in World War One. At 11:00 am, San Jose State University’s 1881 Normal School Bell will toll 21 times, symbolizing the nation’s highest honor: the 21-gun salute.  The Normal School Bell was hanging in Tower Hall on November 11, 1918 and tolled for the original Armistice Day.

After the bell-tolling, participants can join in the San Jose Veterans Day Parade which will start at noon at Highway 87 and West Santa Clara Street. The parade route runs east to Market Street and then south past the Tech Museum to San Carlos Street. U.S. Army Major General Garrett Yee will be the parade’s grand marshall.

At 2:00 pm, there will be a commemoration at Spartan Memorial Chapel, 299 Paseo de San Carlos, San Jose, CA 95112.

Also be sure to visit “San Jose and World War One: A Centennial Exhibition” at Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.

All of these events are free and open to the public.
