The Double Nine Festival, or Chung Yeung Festival, is observed on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Similar to the Ching Ming Festival in spring, the Chung Yeung Festival is when entire families pay their respects to their deceased ancestors by visiting their graves, bringing fresh flowers and traditional Chinese food, such as roast pig, fruit, buns and cakes. The food is laid out in front of the headstone as an offering to their ancestors’ deceased spirits, and is later consumed. They also clean the gravesite, and may burn incense and imitation paper money.
