MOCA’s “Gathering: Collecting and Documenting Chinese American History” exhibit brings together, for the first time ever, the origin stories of 28 Chinese American museums, historical societies and organizations across the U.S. that document and make public the history of Chinese throughout America. Their origin stories are told through a single object or artifact each institution has chosen to loan from its collection for display at MOCA in what will be a historic gathering of such artifacts. These artifacts and the corresponding explanatory stories and text unveil critical periods in American history that are often forgotten. The historical artifacts are presented online through Tenement Museum’s “Your Story, Our Story” digital platform, featuring objects and traditions that tell personal stories of American migration and cultural identity.
The Chinese Historical and Cultural Project (CHCP) is proud to be one of the featured organizations and its chosen artifact for MOCA’s exhibit is an Altar Vessel that was made for the original Ng Shing Gung Temple, ca. 1892.
